Abstract
A serious problem in computer science in North America is
the `Shrinking Pipeline' which describes the decrease in the ratio of
women in computer science from high school to postgraduate studies.
Additionally there has been a decrease in the percentage of bachelors
degrees awarded to women over the last decade. There are similar
concerns about the number of women in computer science in the United
Kingdom, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
In this presentation, I will discuss international trends, as well as
suggested solutions to the shrinking pipeline. I will relate this to
the situation that we experience in Computer Science at the University
of the Witwatersrand, and to recent research into attitudes towards
computer science. Additionally, I will discuss the general demographics
of our student body, and talk about further research we plan to do.
